Our cosmetology program teaches a wide range of beauty skills. While the main focus is on hair, the coursework is designed for students seeking to offer a wide variety of services to their clients.

Classroom Setup & Theoretical Instruction:

Barbering orientation, history of barbering, current state of barbering, life skills management, communication for success, study skills, products and tools, equipment use, client safety consultation, state laws and regulations, professional image, help and professional ethics; basic procedures of tools and implements.

Infection Control & General Sciences:

Health, sanitation, and disinfection; methods, chemical agents, types, classifications, and identifying characteristics of bacterial and viral growth; biology, infections, infection control, exposure incident management, chemistry, electricity, anatomy and physiology, infection control procedures.

Hair & Scalp Care and Treatments:

Structure and composition of hair, hair growth and loss, hair and scalp disorders, analysis, scalp care and massage, brushing, shampooing, conditioning, preparing the client for wet and chemical services, procedures for hair and scalp care.

Shaving:

Facial analysis, mastering the 14 shaving areas, fundamentals of shaving, facial hair design, selecting designs based on client features, shaving strokes, infection control in shaving, safety precautions, changing and disposing of blades, practice procedures.

Hairstyling:

Principles, elements, and philosophy of hair design for men and women; creating balance; men’s design; wet styling; blow-drying and waving; hair wrapping; finger waving; hairstyling; braiding; extensions, hair enhancements, wigs; thermal straightening; long-hair styling; styling procedures; men’s hair replacement systems; consultations, styling methods.

Haircutting:

Haircuts for men and women, principles and basic techniques of sectioning and cutting; identifying basic cuts; client language; body position and posture; razor cutting; scissor and clipper techniques; hair design basics; mastering fades; cutting various hair textures; safety precautions; haircutting procedures.

Hair Coloring & Lightening:

Identifying natural hair color and tone; types of hair color; client consultation; principles and techniques of temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent color; lightening, tinting, toning; highlights, special effects; safety precautions; mustache and beard coloring; color procedures.

Chemical Texture Services:

Hair structure, sectioning principles and techniques, wrapping, processing, curling, relaxing, curl reforming, and chemical texture service procedures.

Skin Care & Facial Treatments:

Skin structure and growth; skin disorders and diseases; skin cancer identification; pigmentation disorders; analysis and consultation; skin type determination; skin care products; client consultation; facial massage; facial equipment; electrotherapy and light therapy; massage theory.

Barbering Business & Retail Sales:

Business fundamentals, opening a barbershop, business plan, written agreements, license requirements and regulations, laws, business operations, policies, compensation packages, phone use, advertising, sales, communication, public/human relations, insurance, job search, résumé and cover letter development, marketing your shop, work skills, barbershop safety, business growth.

Nail Technology:

Nail structure and growth, nail disorders and diseases, manicures, pedicures, hand and foot massage, aromatherapy, paraffin treatments, artificial nail systems, maintenance, repair, nail extensions, acrylic systems, gel systems.

Morning Shift: 26 hours per week

Tuesday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM

Saturday: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Program Length: 68 weeks / 17 months

Evening Shift: 22 hours per week

Tuesday to Friday: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Saturday: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Program Length: 80 weeks / 20 months

Requirements

  • Copy of high school diploma, transcript, college diploma, or GED.
  • Foreign diplomas must include verification from a qualified external agency that confirms equivalency to a recognized U.S. high school diploma, or proof of exceeding compulsory school attendance age.
  • Consult the admissions advisor for evaluation options.
  • Proof of age (driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate with photo ID).
  • Social Security Number.
  • Schedule an appointment to register for the program.
  • ***If under 18, a parent/legal guardian must sign the enrollment contract along with the student.

Our program consists of 1,600 hours required by the state of Utah to obtain your license.
